The purpose of this blog is to share what I know about the nursery business. Be it a small retail nursery or growing for your local farmers markets as I do now.
Over the last 25 years I have started, built, run and sold 2 retail nurseries. They weren’t big nurseries, just local places that catered to the local populations. After selling and retiring from the business I moved to a condo in beautiful downtown Seattle, next to the Pike Place Market and the waterfront. That lasted 3 months. Three months into a six month lease I had already found and bought a five acre piece of property and started building a 20′x150′ greenhouse.
What a Godsend, that led to growing for my local farmers markets which has been ongoing for about eight years now.Being able to talk to tons of strangers that end up becoming regular customers is one of the most satisfying things you can do in life. The amazing thing is that when you are done showing them your stuff they can’t wait to give you their hard earned money so they can take a part of your passion home with them.
Once I moved again to a smaller property I needed smaller greenhouses due to my lack of space. I found no one in the area made smaller houses. The money is in big greenhouses. After contacting a couple of manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest I decided to make my own houses. Well the neighbor wanted one then his daughter needed one and the business just bloomed. Now I”m pretty sure I am the largest manufacturer of home style and small nursery sized greenhouses in Washington.
The idea behind this blog was to help sell greenhouses but what I really want to do is help others get into the plant business. Retailing or farmers markets. So if this subject interests you hop on board and we will begin the roll down the tracks toward small business ownership.
Thanks for joining me.
